Broome County has an events calendar now, and one of its goals is to eventually get every varsity game and match in the county on it. This column is the weekly pick from its sports section; how the calendar works and how to add your own event are in the site’s announcement. This week: results from the first full week of the fall season, football under the lights, and two 5Ks at sunset.
Last week’s results
The result of the week came from Binghamton University: the women’s soccer team beat Syracuse 1-0 at the Bearcats Sports Complex, the program’s first win over an ACC team, and its sixth straight shutout to open the season.
Susquehanna Valley’s boys scored plenty of goals this week: winning 9-0 at Norwich, 3-2 over Chenango Forks and 2-0 over Maine-Endwell in five days. Maine-Endwell’s girls won 9-0 twice, against Oxford and Binghamton, and on Tuesday Vestal’s girls won 2-0 at Union-Endicott and Johnson City’s boys won 2-0 at Waverly. Binghamton girls’ tennis lost 4-3 at Recreation Park to Maine-Endwell on Tuesday after losing by the same score against Susquehanna Valley last Thursday. Golf was also very competitive this week: Vestal beat Union-Endicott 206-207 at the Links at Hiawatha, and Windsor beat Susquehanna Valley 239-242 and Johnson City 234-238.
In football, Chenango Valley won the only all-Broome game, 15-8 over Binghamton at Alumni Stadium, and three more county teams dominated on the road: Union-Endicott won by 31 against Utica Proctor, Maine-Endwell scored 47 in a win against Webster Thomas, and Johnson City won by 43 against Henninger. Windsor and Susquehanna Valley both won in high-scoring games, and Harpursville’s combined team took Newark Valley by a point. Vestal lost 21-10 at Rome Free Academy and Whitney Point lost 28-6 vs Holland Patent.
Sport this week
The strip below is the live list of sporting events, each with an accurate location and time. Tonight, Windsor football plays at home against Walton at 6 pm, and Binghamton girls’ soccer plays Union-Endicott at Alumni Stadium at 7. There is varsity football under the Friday night lights in Union-Endicott, Maine-Endwell and Vestal at 7 pm tomorrow, and Binghamton hosts Horseheads at Alumni Stadium on Saturday at 1. The Bearcats compete at home this weekend: volleyball opens their three-day tournament tonight at 7, the men’s soccer team plays Le Moyne on Saturday at 6:07 pm, and the women’s soccer team hosts Cornell on Sunday at 1. Finally, the two 5Ks show up below because they share the sports section with the varsity events; they are discussed in more detail in the next section.
5Ks at sunset
There are two popular 5K races this week, both at 6:30 pm. Tonight’s Sunset Runway 5K is two laps of the runway at Greater Binghamton Airport, with a Runway Walk and a Kids Run taking place as well. The Kids Run starts earlier, at 6 pm. Saturday’s Race to the Stars takes you through the hills around Kopernik Observatory, and the event continues after the finish with awards, an after-party and the observatory’s telescopes open for viewing.
