Broome County now has a single events calendar, at broomecounty.com/events. It gathers everything going on in the county into one place, and any organisation in the county can have its events on it.
Until now, finding out what was happening meant clicking through a dozen sites and still not knowing your options. The calendar fixes that. Every listing has its own page with the location, the time and, where there is one, a link to tickets or registration.
Varsity sports, every school
The part I am most pleased with is the sports section. It carries the varsity home schedules from twelve county high schools: a page for each football game, soccer match and tennis match played at home, with the right field and the right start time. Athletes can find their own fixtures, and parents can find everyone else’s.
This week only part of the varsity schedule is on it. By Thursday most of the county’s varsity fixtures will be listed, and the aim for next week is all of them.
What else is on it
Alongside the school schedules, the calendar carries the week’s road races and the Broome County Public Library’s programs: board games, yoga, a sewing class, tech help and a family game day on Saturday morning. Most of it is free. More organisations are being added every week, so if the calendar looks thin today, check again next Thursday.
Lucas’s weekly sports column
Every Thursday, Lucas picks the sporting events worth your evening and writes them up: this week’s varsity fixtures, the Sunset Runway 5K and the Race to the Stars. The column is the guide; the calendar is the full list.
Add your event
If your organisation runs events in Broome County, or already publishes a calendar of them, add them at broomecounty.com/add-your-event. Every event gets a page of its own that people can share.
The point
The point of all this is not the calendar. Broome County is a beautiful place to be outside in, and there is more going on here than most of us ever hear about. If your school has a game this week, go and stand on the sideline. If there is a race, run it, or walk it, or take the kids to the Kids Run. Find one thing on the calendar, put the phone down, and go. That is what this site is for.
