BroomeCounty.com carries some of its calendar from feeds published by other organisations. This page lists every one of them, says who publishes it, and tells you how to ask us to stop.
Every event that came from a feed says so on the event page, and links back to the publisher’s own page for it. We do not present anyone else’s schedule as our own listing.
Feeds we carry
Broome County Public Library
Published by the Broome County Public Library at thebcpl.org/events, as an iCalendar feed intended for public subscription. We re-read it and re-sync, and carry the library’s programming for the coming four months: story times, craft sessions, technology classes, yoga, board meetings and the rest. Each event links back to the library’s own page for it, and the library’s description is reproduced as published.
If an event is cancelled or removed from the library’s feed, it comes off this site on our next sync. We do not keep a copy after the library has taken it down.
School athletics, via Aktivate
Twelve Broome County high schools publish their athletics schedules through Aktivate Scheduling, on schedulegalaxy.com: Binghamton, Chenango Forks, Chenango Valley, Harpursville, Johnson City, Maine-Endwell, Seton Catholic Central, Susquehanna Valley, Union-Endicott, Vestal, Whitney Point and Windsor. We carry varsity home fixtures only: no practices, no sub-varsity, no away games. Each fixture links back to the school’s own schedule page for that game, and the event page says which school’s schedule it came from.
We re-read the schedules and re-sync, so a postponement or a cancellation follows through, and a fixture that disappears from a school’s schedule comes off this site on the next sync. Every athletic department has the same offer as below: say the word and that school’s fixtures come down.
Events submitted by people
Everything else on our calendar was submitted by the person or organisation running the event, and is checked before it appears. Those events carry no source line, because there is no outside source to credit.
If you publish one of these calendars
Use the contact form and we will stop carrying your feed. You do not need to give a reason, and we will not ask for one. We will remove the events already imported at the same time.
The same address reaches us if something is wrong rather than unwelcome: an event in the wrong place on the map, a title that reads oddly, a link that goes nowhere, or a description we have reproduced badly. Those are worth telling us about, and they are quick to fix.
How we decide what to carry
A published feed is an invitation to subscribe. It is not, by itself, permission to republish commercially, and this is a commercial site that carries advertising. So: where the publisher is a public body or a community institution, we tell them what we are doing and carry it. Where the publisher licenses its data commercially, we ask first and stay out until the answer is yes. Where there is no feed at all and the information would have to be scraped off a page, we leave it alone.
Facts about when and where a public event happens are not anyone’s property. The work of assembling and describing them is, which is why the source is named on every event and why this page exists.
