This column is the weekly coverage of events from the sports section of the Broome County events calendar; how the calendar works and how to add your own event are in the site’s announcement. This week’s edition: a busy week of sports across the county, three Friday night all-Broome football games, and two local 5Ks, in pictures.
Recent results
Windsor, Maine-Endwell, Vestal, Union-Endicott, Chenango Forks and Susquehanna Valley all won their football games comfortably; Johnson City won the closest game of the nine county teams that played this week, 31-28 against Owego. Chenango Valley lost 20-0 to Deposit-Hancock and Binghamton lost 49-16 at home to Horseheads.
Vestal’s boys soccer team had a good week, winning 5-0 over Union-Endicott on Thursday and 1-0 at Maine-Endwell on Saturday, while Maine-Endwell’s girls team beat Union-Endicott 8-0 on Wednesday. In tennis, Binghamton’s girls hosted Corning at Rec Park on Wednesday evening, and Binghamton University hosted the Carousel Classic at Rec Park from Friday to Sunday.
At Binghamton University, the volleyball team won all three of its matches at the Bearcat Classic, two of them in five sets, the men’s soccer team drew 1-1 with Le Moyne, and the women’s soccer team lost 1-0 to Cornell on an 87th-minute goal.
Sport this week
The strip below is the live list of sporting events, each with an accurate location and time. There are three football games on the strip this week: Johnson City goes against Susquehanna Valley at 6, Chenango Valley hosts Chenango Forks, and Maine-Endwell hosts Vestal, with both games at 7. There is also soccer, tennis, and volleyball action, which will be covered in more depth in the next column.
Two local 5Ks
Both 5Ks from last week’s column were very different races that finished in opposite conditions. The Sunset Runway 5K on Thursday was two laps of the runway at Greater Binghamton Airport, with 271 finishers. Parker Stokes of Seattle flew through the course, winning in 14:48, a minute and forty seconds ahead of second place. Janna Laudermilch, 15, was the first woman to cross the finish line, in a time of 20:30.

Race to the Stars on Saturday took the runners through the hills around Kopernik Observatory, and the runners finished their races in some rain. 72 runners finished the race: Jeffrey Kurish won in 20:58 and Angela Dizenzo won the women’s division in 23:21. Owen Dizenzo, 9, won the youth division.
